Diagnostic Imaging
Radiography (or x-ray), ultrasonography (commonly known as ultrasound), and computed tomography scan (CT or CAT Scan) are all non-invasive modalities of diagnostic imaging.
A radiograph is a type of photograph that can look inside the body and reveal information that may not be discernable from the outside. Most people are familiar with the use of x-rays to diagnose a broken bone, but it can also be used to evaluate certain organs in the body, as well as many other conditions like bladder stones, gastrointestinal issues, chronic arthritis, and certain spinal cord diseases.
Ultrasonography (or ultrasound) enables veterinarians to evaluate the detailed internal architecture of organs such as the gallbladder, kidneys, urinary bladder and heart. Ultrasonography and radiography are the two most popular imaging modalities in veterinary medicine, and each has its pros and cons. In some cases, both ultrasound and x-rays are needed to evaluate certain conditions and should be considered complimentary imaging modalities.
Computed tomography scan (or CT scan) is similar to a traditional x-ray but a CT scan obtains multiple images in “slices” and is then reconstructed into a three-dimensional model of the scanned area. Sometimes contrast is used to detect increased blood flow to an area.
Radiographs, ultrasound, and CT Scans are important tools that can help us make a correct diagnosis for your pet. Our diagnostic imaging service is staffed by caring, skilled professionals who will provide state-of-the-art care with compassion and expertise.
